This year’s Tiddle Walk takes us to Bleaklow Mountain. We will travel by coach from the hotel in Manchester to Bleaklow, a journey of about 40 minutes, and then start the 7 mile walk. The walk takes us across the moors and past the wreckage of “Over Exposed”, the US Air Force Superfortress which crashed here in 1948. Much of the aircraft remain making it a fascinating place to visit,
After completing your Winks at the Tiddle point we come down to the Royal Oak in Glossop for a well deserved pint and lunch.
Accommodation
This year we will be staying at the Crown Plaza in Manchester City Centre. Accommodation includes two nights bed and breakfast.
Hi-Tiddle is a long standing event in Area 45, the Midland Shires.
It was started in 1968, and the ‘rules’ were simple.
It should take place on the week end closest to April Fools Day
It will comprise of a game of Tiddly Winks
The Tiddle must take place at and elevation of 2000 feet, or more.
The winners shall organise the event for the following year.
There are no established rule to define what “winners” actually means. Clearly a Table providing ten Tiddlers is going to achieve a higher score than one fielding just two players. So, it should be the highest average. So what is the scoring ?
Tiddle is played on the Tiddle board.
Points are scored as follows:
King or Outer Gold Rose – 50 points
Inner Rose – 25
King – 50 points
Roundel – 10 points
Winks that land outside the roundel must be taken again. This is to avoid Tiddlers trying to score 0, and thereby avoid winning and organising the event next year.
But in practice this scoring is for guidance only. Also, the ‘winners’ could be the Table achieving the lowest score. Usually, in practice, the ‘winning’ Table has to be one that wants to win and is up for organising the event the following year.
The winning table gets the Tiddle Board, The Tiddle playing board and the individual assigned Tiddle Organiser, get the Tiddle stick.
Over the years various other prizes have been awarded and lost. The organising Table is supposed to get the back prior to the next event, but this has not always worked out.
Other awards are: (when present)
Bottom Rung – Table scoring lowest score
Too Tiddled to Tiddle – someone who over indulged and couldn’t make the walk
Spirit of Tiddle – someone who did something noteworthy on the walk
Travel Trophy – Tiddler who travalled farther to get to the event
Attendance Trophy – Table fielding the most Tiddlers.
The event starts with arrival at the venue on the Friday. Then a coach ride to the start of the walk, the walk, the Tiddle, walk back down to a pub for lunch then back to the hotel to prepare for a black tie gala dinner where the winners are announced.
In addition to the fun and fellowship enjoyed Tiddlers also received a small commemorative gift, a tankard, cuff links, hip flask and so on.
In 2006 a pin badge was added to the collectables.
The list below shows the locations enjoyed by Tiddlers over is 57 year history.
